How it works

Why this table can differ from the BBC's

A league table on this site is two things stitched together, and the seam is worth understanding because it is why our table sometimes moves before anyone else's. The ORDER is the official one, taken straight from the feed — it encodes tiebreakers we have no way to compute, like head-to-head records and fair-play points. The NUMBERS are arithmetic over results we already hold. So between official refreshes the table stays honest about what has actually been played, and where the official order cannot be improved on, we leave it exactly alone.

The order comes from the official feed. The numbers come from results we already hold — so a table here can move before the official one does.

How to play it

  1. 1We store the official table and refresh it a few times a day.
  2. 2Between refreshes we add any result we have that the official copy has not caught up with.
  3. 3Points, played, wins, draws, losses and goals are plain arithmetic on those results.
  4. 4The Live chip above the table says how many results have been added.

Worth knowing

  • We never re-order two teams that are level on points, goal difference AND goals scored. What separates them is head-to-head, or fair-play points, or in some competitions a drawing of lots — rules we cannot compute, so we keep the official order instead of guessing.
  • A result only counts once. If the official table already includes a match, we do not add it again.
  • In the summer a league shows LAST season's final table, labelled with its season, until the new one starts.
